Canal City Hakata

Canal City Hakata is a very popular tourist spot in Fukuoka. It is a commercial complex consisting of a hotel, a theatre, a movie theater, shops, restaurants and a showroom that are all housed in one building around the canal. Especially worth checking out among them is the Ramen Stadium gathering popular ramen noodle shops from all over Japan and the 1st basement floor of Canal City OPA, where popular character goods are available.

Kushida Shrine

Fukuoka citizens love this shrine. You can see a decorated float of Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival exhibited on the shrine premises throughout the year. Sacred water springing near the main hall is said to have an effect in preserving youth. Its amazing taste is surely worth trying!

Hakata Machiya Folk Museum

Located within walking distance of Kushida Shrine, this facility introduces the life and culture of Hakata in good old days. Here you can visit Hakata’s traditional craft workshops such as Hakata dolls and Hakata Goma (tops) and try your hand at weaving Hakata-ori textiles for free. You can also purchase traditional handicrafts and Japanese confection that make perfect souvenirs.

Hakata Kawabata Shopping Arcade

A variety of shops such as those dealing with Hakata dolls and other folk crafts, Japanese confectionery shops, 100 yen shops and ramen noodle shops are lined up along a 400 meter arcade connecting Canal City Hakata and Hakata Riverain. A decorated float of Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, which is the pride of Hakata, is exhibited throughout the year at the event square in the arcade. On Friday and weekends, here you can also enjoy Zenzai (sweet red bean soup).

Hakata Riverain

Hakata Riverain is a commercial complex consisting of “eeny meeny miny mo,” which houses the shops with the latest fashions and trends, restaurants and cafes, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum exhibiting the contemporary Asian art which occupies on the 7th and 8th floors, Hakataza Theatre hosting musicals and kabuki plays, and the famous hotel in Japan, Hotel Okura Fukuoka. Here you can enjoy all sorts of shopping, dining, entertainment and art.

Fukuoka Tower

This is a symbol of Fukuoka and Japan’s tallest seaside tower.
The view from the observatory at 123 meter above sea level is spectacular. You can get a 360 degree view of the whole city. You can enjoy the sun sinking into the sea at dusk, and the glittering night view of Fukuoka at night.

Tenjin 

Tenjin is the largest shopping town in Kyushu. There are three major department stores like Iwataya, Daimaru and Mitsukoshi and many other fashion buildings. Many of those buildings are connected by the underground shopping mall, which is very convenient for you to shop. As there are also large electric stores such as Best Denki Fukuoka main branch and Bic Camera, you can purchase the latest electronic home appliances!

Yanagibashi Market

This market contains a variety of specialty stores offering mentaiko (spicy cod roe), one of the popular local specialties, seafood, fruits, vegetables, tempura and Japanese confection. There are also restaurants where you can enjoy sashimi and sashimi rice bowl. They are closed early in the evening, so you’d better hurry!

Why not trying one of those food stalls for dinner? Many of those stalls offer a variety of dishes from the cuisine of Hakata such as ramen and one-bite size dumplings, to other Japanese cuisines such as yakitori and tempura that you can enjoy with sake and other alcohol drinks. They are mini restaurants, which Fukuoka can be proud of.
