Hakata Magemono
Hakata magemono is wooden craftwork of Hakata whose origin is not clarified yet with many different stories. They started to be manufactured and became popular since the Edo period. They were once dedicated to Hakozaki shrine as ritual articles. Thin boards of Japanese cedar is bent and crafted into rice containers and lunch boxes. People have loved these breathable wooden lunch boxes as they preserve the fresh taste of rice. Hakata magemono products are also appreciated as items for tea ceremony. The folk crafting tradition is designated as an intangible cultural heritage of Fukuoka city.
