Summary
Magemono is a special wooden folk craft of Maedashi-machi, Fukuoka city. Thin boards of Japanese cedar and strips of cherry trees are bent and crafted into a container or a dish by careful hands of masters. These were once used as ritual items of Hakozaki Hachiman shrine. The shop tamaki is now making everyday items including rice containers, lunch boxes and items for tea ceremony. Wooden containers are breathable and people notice the difference from other containers when they have rice from them. Special trays for kids are called Poppo zen and well known as a local specialty. Available at Hakata Machiya Folk Museum and Hiro Sato shop in Nishijin. Online order is also available at their website.
