History of Hakata area(Hakata-ku)
Summary
If you want to know the history of Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, you should visit this exhibition hall in Kushida shrine of Hakata. The picture screens by Mitoma family (traditional family of master painter) depicting the scenes from the generations of Yamakasa festival and magnificent pictures of Oiyama (the climactic part of Yamakasa) drawn on wooden plaques are displayed. The ancient Yamakasa reproduced with Hakata dolls crafted by contemporary craftsmen is a must-see! There are also many valuable historic materials of Hakata in this hall such as Shuin letter (designated cultural property of Fukuoka city), which was sent by Toyotomi Hideyoshi who supervised the land division of Hakata, old Matsubayashi masks made in Muromachi period (1336-1573) and others.
