Summary

Iki no Matsubara Bulwark Against Mongol Invasion

This bulwark against Mongolian invasion stretches from Nagatare coast to Odo coast for about 2.5 kilometers. An archeological research found that the bulwark was built with stones piled up into the wall of 1 - 1.5 meters in width and 1.8 meters in height and the inside was reinforced with clay.

A famous scene from the picture record of Mongolian invasion “Moko Shurai Ekotoba”, which features Takesaki Suenaga, a then vassal of Shogun, riding a horse, depicts a historical scene of this very place. Today, a part of the bulwarks is maintained and open to the visitors.
